 The heart logo comes from graphic designer, Lisa Hoffackers’ rendition of an actual photo of a cactus that was taken by Executive Director, Connie Saindon, near the Anza Borrego Visitors Center in Southern California, just days before the first group was conducted in September 1998. It seemed fitting that this cactus shaped like a heart had an actual hole in it symbolizing the broken heart that results when a loved one dies in an unnatural way. The shadow projected by the cactus is complete, inspiring us to know that there is healing beneath the pain. In keeping with the symbol, the broken heart sat among many other heart shaped cactus’, showing how this website and our projects’ hope is to help to re-build connections with others and let survivors know that they are not alone.
